John Winston Ono Lennon,
geboren als John Winston Lennon op 9
oktober 1940 in Liverpool overleed in New York
op 8 december 1980.
Hij werd bekend als een Engels popmusicus. Hij
was vredesactivist en oprichter van de
Liverpoolse groep The Quarrymen, die na
enkele aanpassingen in de bezetting evolueerde
tot The Beatles.
Samen met Paul McCartney, George
Harrison en Ringo Starr had Lennon met deze
groep een belangrijke rol in de popmuziek.
Nog voor het einde van The
Beatles richtte Lennon samen met zijn tweede
vrouw Yoko Ono de Plastic Ono Band op en
werd een van de belangrijkste gezichten van
de hippiebeweging. Niet alleen door zijn
muzikale bijdragen werd Lennon bekend maar
eveneens door zijn politieke en
levensbeschouwelijke visie als vredesactivist en
vrijdenker. Dat gold zowel in zijn muziek en als
lid van The Beatles, met de Plastic Ono Band als
solo-artiest.
Met name met de nummers Give Peace a Chance, Power
to the People, Happy Xmas (War is over) en Imagine.
Op 8 december 1980 werd de 40-jarige John Lennon,
in het bijzijn van zijn vrouw Yoko Ono, voor hun
huis op straat doodgeschoten door door een
jaloerse fan, Mark David Chapman.
De moord schokte de hele wereld.
Chapman kreeg levenslang en kan sinds 2000 elke
twee jaar om vervroegde vrijlating vragen, wat
tot dusver altijd is geweigerd door de commissie
die over zijn detentie gaat.
